HISTORIC WALKING TOUR OVERVIEW

Tucked between emerald hills and a glittering harbor lies a town with stories carved into every stone.

On this 2.5-hour walking tour, we’ll uncover the layers of Charlotte Amalie, a 350-year-old Caribbean port city. From its pre-Columbian roots to the era of pirates, privateers, and colonial intrigue, you’ll walk through centuries of history.

From architecture and culture to folklore and flora, every corner holds a story. Follow your guide through winding alleys, centuries-old step streets, and hidden gardens as you hear tales of pirates, corrupt governors, merchants, revolutionaries, and the African peoples—enslaved and free—whose resilience continues to shape St. Thomas.

This tour isn’t about checking boxes. We visit the highlights, yes—but it’s the quiet corners and untold stories that reveal the city’s true soul.

What to Expect

We begin at the historic steps of Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands—and from there, history comes alive with every step. As we wind through the town, we’ll stop at some of Charlotte Amalie’s most iconic landmarks, each with its own surprising story to tell.

You might find yourself standing in front of Hotel 1829, a grand 19th-century merchant’s mansion, or climbing the legendary 99 Steps, built from bricks once used as ship ballast. Along the way, we may visit one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, admire centuries-old churches, or peek into the past at the former estate of General Santa Ana, whose name echoes from both Caribbean and Mexican history.

Our final stop is something truly special: #13 Wimmelskafts Gade, a beautifully preserved former slave’s quarters and now home to the island’s beloved 3 Queens Distillery. Here, you’ll step through an unassuming doorway into a lush tropical garden, where we’ll raise a glass of complimentary house-made rum punch in honor of the women who shaped this island’s spirit—both literally and figuratively.
