St. Thomas Distillery Tour (and The History of Rum)
Duration: 2.5 hours Difficulty: Boozy
St. Thomas Distillery Tour Overview
Walk the streets of this old island town while your guide shares the history of rum and how it shaped St. Thomas and the entire Caribbean.
After visiting several historical locations in Charlotte Amalie you’ll enter the walls of a 200-year-old slave house that now houses a craft distillery.
Learn about the process of rum-making from start to finish. A master distiller will share not only the steps involved but also provide samples of rum in its early stages of fermentation. You’ll also get to sample aged rum directly from a barrel!
This is the southernmost craft rum distillery in the United States. It is tucked away in a beautifully restored building dating back generations and nearly lost to time. Now owned by a native from St. Thomas, the distillery is a love letter to rum and the history of St. Thomas.
And after your tour, you’ll get to relax with a rum cocktail in the private gardens at the distillery. This will be the highlight of your trip to St. Thomas.

What to Expect on the distillery tour
Enjoy a wonderfully casual exploration of the history of rum in St. Thomas. We’ll begin the tour at Fort Christian and so will begin your introduction to the island rum experience. We’ll start the tour by sampling a small bit of “kill devil”, aka rum. After the rum and a brief chat about the fort you’ll get to explore the walls and dungeons of this massive fortification.
During the tour we’ll weave the beguiling history of St. Thomas along with the rise of rum on this and many of the surrounding Caribbean islands.
The guided tour will take you to stops at several iconic spots on our way to the longest running craft distillery in the Virgin Islands.
At the distillery you’ll learn the process for taking sugarcane and turning this sweet little grass into rum. And you’ll you get to help in the process by tasting and sharing your thoughts on the progress of the spirit.
After the tour you’ll be free to relax in the tropical gardens as long as you like and enjoy a rum cocktail. And rest assured there is plenty of time and rum for enjoying another cocktail or two.
